The Kaleo Immigrant Center (Kaleo Centro de Apoyo para Familias Migrantes) is a response to the urgent need here in Reynosa, on the border with the United States, as well as an actionable response to God's call to serve and love according to Matthew 25:34-40.
In 2021, a migrant tent camp emerged in a downtown plaza as an influx of migrants arrived in Reynosa with the hopes to cross the Mexico-US border. With other migrant shelters over capacity, the makeshift camp grew rapidly, but did not provide adequate and safe refuge for the migrants and asylum seekers. While it provided a gathering place and new community, it did not have adequate plumbing systems or access to clean drinking water. Women and children were especially vulnerable.
Currently there are approximately 2,500 migrants still residing in this camp, all of whom are being evicted as the tent camps are being abolished.
Kaleo International is partnering with the non-profit organization Sidewalk School in order to provide a refuge that provides basic needs of safety and shelter, while also providing a space for education along with emotional and spiritual support. The Kaleo Immigrant Center will house, care for, and assist up to 500 women, children, and families.
Our goal is to create a safe and family oriented environment where people can thrive, grow, and encounter the love of Jesus while in the process of applying for asylum in the United States. We feel strongly that this is what the Lord has called us to do, we know that it is what the Word of God compels us to do (Deuteronomy 12:29; Isaiah 1:17; Matthew 25:34-40). Our heart is to see people transformed and experience the tangible love of Jesus and, ultimately, share it wherever they go.
The construction is divided up into three main phases:
- In Phase One, we are building dormitories, bathrooms, laundries, provisional kitchens and a boundary fence so that we can begin moving people in. We are at a good point in the construction but need funds still to finish this phase.
- In Phase Two, we will complete mini apartment style rooms for family units and build a fully functioning permanent kitchen, warehouse, classrooms and workshops, fences for the animals and vegetable gardens, and solar hot water systems.
- In Phase Three, we will see the completion of a large permanent structure that will be both a church and a school.
Total needed to complete as of March 2022... $100,000 USD
